Community Minute: Empowering Latino youth to reach their full potential

Identity, Inc. is a community-based organization serving Latino youth and their families in Montgomery County, Md. Its mission is to provide opportunities for youth to believe in themselves and realize their full potential. Identity designs and implements programs that facilitate the successful transition of youth into adulthood, giving them the foundation necessary to graduate from high school and become contributing members of their communities. The programs are based on the Positive Youth Development model, which build on youths’ natural strengths, empowering them to overcome challenges such as poverty, family separation, or cultural/linguistic isolation. Identity has established programs in 15 schools and two Youth Opportunity Centers, which serve gang-involved and at-risk youth. In partnership with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Identity also operates three school-based Wellness Centers. Annually, close to 4,000 youth and families benefit from Identity’s programs and services free of charge.
