As with other national parks, the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park has been shuttered by the federal government shutdown.

The government shutdown has united merchants and officials in Harpers Ferry in hopes of keeping visitors coming to the historic destination.

The community relies heavily on tourism dollars from visitors to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which also offers parking and public restrooms. In the absence of those amenities, merchants and civic leaders are providing both services to visitors.

Merchants and town officials tell The Journal they've pooled their resources to provide portable toilets to visitors and will not enforce two-hour parking limits.

But now the service faces new accusations that it might be serving NSA surveillance efforts.
