National Cathedral Raises Awareness About Bullying Of LGBT Community

Earlier this year the Washington National Cathedral announced its decision to perform same-sex marriages, and this weekend the local institution will focus on another LGBT issue: hate-inspired bullying, discrimination and violence.

In the early morning hours of October 7, 1998 Matthew Shepard was abducted by two men, tied to a split-rail fence and beaten so severely that he later died from his injuries. The East Coast premiere of a new documentary, Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine, will be held tonight inside the church. Told from the perspective of director Michele Josue, a close friend of Matt's, the film introduces viewers to important locations and people in Shepard's life.

On Sunday morning at 10 a.m., Judy Shepard, Matt's mother, will join Jane Clementi, mother of Tyler Clementi, Joshua Deese, and Cathedral Dean Gary Hall in a forum at the church. A special service to pray for LGBT youth will follow the discussion.
